Lathe Machining
The lathe machining of medical instruments (turning and lathing) is one of the basic technological operations in the course of their manufacturing. Practically, it is always connected with the tasks of product manufacturing of medical metals and alloys and can be used for processing of other strong, but non-brittle nonmetallic materials much less often. It is used in cases when a blank of metal implant or prosthetic component shall be necessary put into a symmetric cylindrical or tapered shape as well as if it is necessary to cut external or internal screw threads or cylindrical grooves. This frequently occurs in the prosthesis practice – the implants, different abutments, healing abutments, transfers, screws, wires, etc. are provided with a lot of cylindrical or screw elements or being used as the initial materials for further operations of product formation.
The lathe machining of implants or prosthetic components for surgical medicine do not differ fundamentally from the one in the industrial manufacturing. Its essence is the same, that is bringing a fastened non-rotating single-tip tool (single-edged cutting tool) up to a fastened blank rotating around the axis of symmetry in order to remove (shear, grind off) a layer of metal so as to form a cylindrical or tapered surface, cylindrical or screw threads (grooves). Some difference exist only in the applicable materials, processing accuracy, and most importantly in the assurance of due cleanliness of work performance in order to minimize further operations on sterilization of finished prosthetic product for its use in medical purposes.
