Barrel Finishing

Barrel Finishing

The barrel finishing is similar to the electromagnetic barrel finishing by effect exerted on a machined part. It is also equivalent to the abrasive machining with regard to small-sized machined parts. The difference between the techniques is less as the operating principle and more as the focus, if the electromagnetic barrel finishing is more focused on the individual machining, the barrel finishing is focused on a high-volume manufacturing. The technology of barrel finishing better copes with the task when it is necessary to clean and grind a whole lot of small-sized parts, which can be loaded in an operating barrel at once. The natural analogue of this technology is a ground sea, which product – a beach pebble – receives its ground surface as a result of long-term mutual collision and friction.

The operating principle of barrel finishing is simple as well as the efficient:

the abrasive tumbling media and machined parts are loaded in a hollow barrel rotating on small revolutions;

• when a barrel rotates, the tumbling media and machined parts mutually collide and rub multiple times as a result of which the abrasive material of tumbling media gradually, bit by bit rubs smooth (grinds) machined surfaces smoothening them and removing oxides and contaminants.
Barrel Finishing
The technique of barrel finishing as compared with the electromagnetic technique is characterized by a larger softness and smoothness (gradation) of the effect on machined surface for which reason it can be also used for cleaning of the parts with the elements of cut thread. Small-sized hard-alloy or ceramic elements in the shape of tetrahedrons, tapes, parallelepipeds, balls (shot) or quite crystal sand corundum (aluminium oxide) as a rule serve as the abrasive tumbling media. The technology of barrel finishing can be used by dry (only tumbling media and machined parts) are put in the barrel) or fluid method (the buffer fluid is also present in the barrel).

The revolutions of a barrel in the barreling machine shall not be high in principle because according to the technology, the machined parts shall not be forced against the barrel walls by a centrifugal force, they must freely roll over in the interaction and constant friction with the tumbling media. Selecting such technological elements as the material, shape, and size of tumbling media, it is possible to receive different machining parameters by the depth of material removal, size of machined parts, and the size of their elements (thread height, depth of grooves, etc.) Barrel Finishing
In the manufacturing area of the ABM Technology Medical Product Plant, the barreling machines are used along with other cleaning and grinding machinery making it possible to obtain required result there, where other machinery may prove to be less effective. Increasing the technological capabilities of our manufacturing, the barrel finishing thus substantially enlarges the scope of tasks that we are solving.
